Celebrating our First Workforce Development Program

We’ve just wrapped up our very first month-long Workforce Development Program for Lovelady graduates—and what an inspiring journey it’s been! It was a privilege to work alongside Megan Shultz, Shae Anderson, Angie Duam, and Priscilla DeZell throughout this transformative experience.

Throughout the program, these incredible women developed a wide range of essential business and nonprofit skills. From crafting candles from start to finish—then wrapping, packaging, and shipping them to wholesale accounts—they approached every task with care and creativity. They also gained valuable customer service experience by selling the candles they made, along with other mission-driven products that support Portraits of Hope.

Megan and Angie gained hands-on insight into running a gallery by shadowing and working with Brittany Barnes. They helped inventory artwork, input data, hang exhibits, and prepare for an opening event. Megan also contributed to a special exhibit and had the opportunity to gain kitchen experience. Under the guidance of Louisa Knox, a professional in catering and event presentation, she quickly learned the basics of food prep and service.

Priscilla also explored the art of custom framing under the tutelage of master framer Cathy Dement, learning what goes into finishing a piece from start to finish. While the physical demands of the job may not be ideal for her due to a disability, her attention to detail and strong work ethic were truly impressive.

Shae did an outstanding job collaborating with Ginger Wallace on a wide range of tasks, including organizing office files and materials, setting up for various events, and ensuring everything was in place—from tables and chairs to microphones and food. Additionally, Shae played a key role in selling products created by the Lovelady Graduates to event attendees. Her dedication, attention to detail, and teamwork greatly contributed to the success of each event.

One of the most meaningful parts of the program was participating in the 210 Project with Don Ankenbrandt—a powerful tool for discovering your unique place in God’s story. Through this experience, the women explored their strengths, values, and God-given purpose.

Molly Stone helped the women write and update their résumés, an essential step toward securing employment.

Carolyn Lankford led interview role-play sessions, guiding them in identifying career interests and setting achievable goals as they re-enter the workforce.

A photography workshop with Katherine Berdy ignited creative energy and taught the women how to recognize light, shadow, and composition. The results were beautiful. Priscilla stood out with her natural talent in photography, and we hope to help her pursue future opportunities in that field.

Kelly Gage led a powerful class on how to present a personal testimony in three minutes—encouraging the women to share their stories with clarity, confidence, and grace.

Kate Eubanks helped the women with hair and make-up which was so helpful and they all glowed. They thoroughly enjoyed this time with Kate and it was a confidence builder for sure.

We ended the month with a celebratory luncheon, hosted and prepared by the women to thank those who supported them throughout the program. They created the invitations, set the tables, helped prepare the meal, and personally thanked each mentor and instructor. With help from Louisa Knox, they also learned how to prepare a fresh salad, serve plates, and gain practical knowledge relevant to the food industry.

Twenty-one guests joined us for this beautiful, heartfelt event—a true culmination of everything these women learned and accomplished.

We are so proud of their growth, confidence, and dedication. This is just the beginning—and we can’t wait to see where their journeys lead next!
